Overview

As part of a cross-functional team, I designed an app solution that connects a user's mobile phone to their insulin pump. The primary goal was to provide users with the discretion to view pump and CGM data on a larger screen while ensuring a seamless user experience. We worked to build an app that displays pertinent therapy data and uploads pump data to the cloud for users to review with their health care providers.

Process

Designing the app involved a collaborative process with the project team. After receiving initial requirements, I created wireframes and low-fidelity mockups for each app feature, which I then reviewed with stakeholders. Next, I built prototypes to test the features internally before testing with user sample groups via medical device formative study sessions. Throughout the process, I refined features and functionality to meet both user and business needs.

Many of my design decisions were influenced by the app’s reliance on Bluetooth connectivity to display therapy data from the paired pump. I worked closely with developers to ensure that the right signals were being sent and received. My deliverables included design specification and workflow documents. These were used to guide the development team while implementing the app and were referenced by the quality assurance team while running software tests. These documents needed to adhere to stringent standards since they were included in regulatory submissions to the FDA, requiring extreme attention to detail.

Impact

Since its release in 2020, the t:connect mobile app has had over 100k monthly active users across 50+ supported devices. Building on this success, we expanded the app's functionality to allow users to initiate bolus therapy via the mobile app (see Mobile Bolus project), and we are currently expanding the app platform to be the primary controller for the next generation Tandem insulin pump, Mobi.

Design System

To build out a consistent user experience in the t:connect app, I created a design system of styles, components, patterns, and templates.

Mobile Bolus

The Mobile Bolus feature enables users to manage basic therapy needs in addition to viewing their pump data in the t:connect app.

Mobi

Mobi is Tandem’s upcoming insulin pump that relies on the t:connect app as the primary pump interface.
